Back in time: how to transform a seashell fossil in a charm
by Paolo Ghiga
The bustling area teems with men who light a fire, who finalise a chipping indirect, by testing its effectiveness, who realize lanyards hurling back vegetable fibres. It is not a post apocalyptic scenario post nuclear war but the next goal of some apprenticeships of experimental archaeology held Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September Park Orecchiella, s. Romano (Lucca - Tuscany), edited by Alfio and Ilaria Tomaselli.
At the heart of this Laboratory of Experimental Archaeology the relationship between modern humankind and nature and its riches: in the era of most exasperated technology, consisting of microchip and new materials, the possibility of constructive does not depend on a lithium battery and a power outlet, at least for sometime now, and be one with nature.
Recognizing materials suited to chipping, an ancient stone working process to build tools that may assist in hunting and the rigors of daily use, production of ropes made from twist of vegetable fibre, tendons and casings of animals, the techniques of ignition of the fire, the calf skins, by scraping the tanning, mineral colours and painting techniques, the realization of jewellery with soapstone and fossils and today, processing of the bone and the creation of weapons as the propeller and the bolas: these experiences are very close to environmental education, even, let's say, a worthy prologue.
The warning signs of speech content educational and didactic project: footnotes on the site of the laboratory is particularly welcomes the spirit expressed in the slogan "Disclose involving" without sterile virtual presentations, but through handedness and direct knowledge. I would add "To know and better safeguarding".
Prehistoric men and women survived by applying these techniques while respecting, partly unconscious, of nature: but today that added value we could draw from this experience? Certainly understand that plunder nature without appreciating, at least in part, the mechanisms and potential, represents the highway on which accelerate towards the destruction of ecosystems.
Furthermore we are offered the possibility to defend with most interest and objectivity, including practice, the intrinsic value of nature: the more effective the commitment in supporting a campaign in defence of something you know closely, which is touched by hand?
One final point that should not be underestimated: handedness and the relationship with a world and with certain artisan traditions that modernity has almost forced to set aside should lead us to re-evaluate the man immersed in nature, with which form a harmonious whole, a reciprocal exchange of infinity.
Once again the didactic lesson and environmental education can lead us towards a better relationship with the world around us and that we live, often, with lack of awareness. Good chipping to all those who decide to participate!
