Easter 2011: the environment infects chocolate eggs

by Eleonora Anello

Not just milk or dark. This year on the market you can find Easter eggs: organics, solidarity, Fairtrade certified, sustainable, recycled or recyclable (with few packaging) and with secure surprises, built with natural and non-toxic materials. The eggs, without too much trouble for the consumer, can be bought in shops and trade fair and even at supermarkets.

The large distribution is, therefore, ready. For example, Italian Coop, as every year, sells its own brand eggs in solidarity, while the confectionery company Bauli has joined the project Impact Zero of Lifegate, in order to reduce carbon emissions and offsetting the pollution caused by production processes the certain types of eggs.

In terms of associations could not miss the LAV (Antivivisection Lega) that in many squares in Italy, since the beginning of April, started up the campaign that calls a halt to animals testing on cosmetics. The LAV asks the European Parliament and the Italian Government cosmetic "good" with animals, yet safe for consumers. In these occasions, it has been possible to chat with the volunteers, to buy the egg of the environmental association, take the "Practical Guide to cosmetics not tested on animals", available also on-line on the LAV site, that is a useful tool to guide the choice of cosmetic products that is certified and not tested on animals. The real goal of the campaign focuses on the petition. The signatures collected intend to prevent any slippage in the imposed total "blockade", for the countries of the European Union, in carrying out tests of cosmetic raw materials on animals. The Directive should enter into force by 2013.

«Thanks to an international campaign we have achieved a European directive that prohibited the sale of cosmetics tested on animals since 1998 - as it says on the site LAV - The ban has been postponed several times».

«The EU ban is likely to be postponed for another 10 years: EU Parliament and the Commission could follow the questionable advice of experts who seem to favour a further postponement of the ban, even going against the public opinion that they represent, which declared that it strongly opposed to vivisection in particular this area, and against the wider part of the scientific contrary to animal testing - says Michela Kuan, biologist, responsible LAV vivisection – The LAV wants to avoid that risk, which would cause delay in the progress of research and in terms of safety, and thousands of animals suffering and even death».

You have until April 30 to say NO to retrograde experiments, which cause severe suffering to animals and failing to provide adequate security for consumers. You can sign online or, in Italy, at retailers L’Erbolario, where you can enter the contest “Amali anche quando ti ami” (Love them even when you love) that is giving away 100 packs of cosmetic products L’Erbolario. The list of companies that do not experiment on animals can be found at the following address http://demo.lav.nethouse.it/index.php?id=716.

However, no just a few days at the opening of chocolate eggs, consumerism and greedy Easter ritual that it is not difficult to add environmental value.
