Waste reduction: union is strength

by Silvia Musso

The count-down for the first edition of the EWWR - European Week for Waste Reduction has started. It is a wide environmental communication campaign promoted by the European Union, with the Life+ program support: from the centre to the peripheries, it aims to involve national and local levels in order to promote, among citizens, a growing awareness on the excessive quantity of waste produced and on the necessity to cut them drastically.

The 2009 edition will take place from 21st to 29th of November in several EU States (such as France, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain, UK, Sweden and Estonia), following the success achieved by the pilot edition held last year, that registered a great impact on media and the involvement of several different subjects (united by a common aim), as local authorities, schools, enterprises, consortia for waste management, NGOs, associations, shop and citizens.
Who, among these subjects, decides to participate actively in the EWWR, organizing and promoting a virtuous action aimed at reducing/reusing waste, will be named as “project developer”. The actions that can be held during the Week should be inspired to five main themes: too much waste, better production, better consumption, a longer life products, less waste thrown away. All actions require to be validate by the European Steering Committee.
The best actions will be awarded the “European Waste Reduction Awards” in Bruxelles at the end of the EWWR.
