Scotland to start “Zero Waste” communication campaign

by Valeria Rocca

«Being friends of enviroment, means living in a way to diminish the damage that we cause to the atmosphere». With this affirmation Richard Lochhead, Secretary to the Atmosphere of Scottish Government has synthetized the philosophy of the communication campaign “Zero Waste”, recently introduced to the Blair Drummond Safari Park, near Stirling.

Mascotte of initiative is a “blue elephant” (high 10 feets), that will be the protagonist of a advertising and educational tour, organized in collaboration with the local agencies, the supermarkets and the food-shops that will touch the main Scottish cities.
For six weeks the plan will have wide advertising space and of deepening on the important issuing tv, brodcasting station and on the poster.

The objective is to make citizens aware of how much can be made in order to help the atmosphere, starting from own daily routine, recycle more and more often.
Among the priorities there are the reduction of packings of stores and supermarkets, the lessening of the amount of paper used in the offices and above all of the domestic waste.

The suggestion is born from the knowledge that all the material carried in rubbish dump is a resource from being able to recover. It becomes, therefore, necessary to educate and to stimulate the population and the institutions to reduce waste and cut down the use of raw materials, to stimulate the eco-design and the r-use of materials and to give them a new value and a second life avoiding any waste.

The engagement of the Scottish government is important and heads to create a recycling system that assures zero refuse society. If the experiment succeeds, it will be an example for all.
