"Eternit free" or how to combine the dissemination of renewable energy sources with the remediation of asbestos. The campaign, promoted by AzzeroCO2 and Legambiente, will make use of Italian Provinces to contact the companies on their territory with the objective to help them to benefit for special incentives introduced by the Decree of 19 February 2007. The decree introduced an incentive mechanism that rewards the architectural integration of photovoltaic systems and in particular the replacement of the asbestos roofing of industrial or agricultural buildings.
The first Province to join the project was Lecce (South Italy): 99 Municipalities, there are estimated that the surface of asbestos present in industrial warehouses to removing is equal more than 250,000 square meters. With Eternit free all farms in the province of Salento are properly informed about the possibility of using national and local incentives. From data of the provincial administration, Confartigianato Lecce and Confindustria Lecce, will identify the subjects to involve in the project.
Even the Mountain Community of Marsica (Centre Italy), will draw upon the knowledge of AzzeroCO2 both for the technical coordination of the campaign and to establish a direct contact with potential beneficiaries, which is reflected in the establishment of a dedicated desk for more information and free advice.
Many other provinces are one step closer to accession with Alessandria, Turin and Vercelli (Piedmont), and then again Grosseto, Rome and Bari. The sponsoring environmental groups ask the government administrations a precious as formal help: to make a precise monitoring and support the campaign providing information to the recipients of the incentives.
The virtuous circle of local governments, businesses and citizens produced by the campaign has to trigger as soon as possible because it is possible to take advantage of incentives up to December 2010. A challenge for the Italian administrations that too often talk about themselves for the excessive times of implementation. To expedite the procedures this time it will contribute a safe return of image and switch to renewable energy, which inevitably means a reduction in consumption and in greenhouse gas emissions needed to achieve the goals set by the Kyoto Protocol.
