The new lights of carnival

by Eleonora Anello

If you consider the tons of paper of confetti and streamers thrown, the spray foam, the music blaring, the oils of sweet fried and the old, smoky and noisy tractors that pulled the floats, one can not say that the carnival is an ecological feast. Perhaps, precisely because of the environmental impact of this ancient and popular event, the manifestations eco friendly multiply. Many the "eco" carnivals preceded by workshops where you can create masks with material recovery. It’s the case of Perugia where, as we had anticipated in a previous post, the carnival is celebrated even in “ecological stations” where between strufoli and frappe (typical carnival sweet), will be distributed bags for separate waste collection.

Evidence of this commitment to the environment is the Carnival of Verona (the city of Romeo and Juliet), now in its 480th edition, probably the oldest carnival in Europe, which will fuel the illuminations of its 60 floats with photovoltaic and hydroelectric energy sources. The "venerdì gnocolar" culmination of the "Bacanal" of Verona, coincides with the day of “M'illumino di meno” event to wich the Italian city enthusiastically adheres.«Also this year the Municipality of Verona participate to the initiative promoted by Caterpillar», says at the press conference to present the assessor of ecology and environment Federico Sboarina, «As in previous years turning out the artistic lights of our major monuments. This year we have involved the primary schools so that children become more responsible in the use of lights in the classroom, and the twin cities. The new message that we want to run is beyond the energy saving, promoting the use of renewable energy. Clearly we know that this is an initiative of a single day but it exemplifies a virtuous behaviour. We will use our photovoltaic and hydropower, remember that the stadium Bentegodi, but also others. Therefore, we will not only help save energy, but also the spread of the use of clean energy key to improve the quality of our air and our environment».

Virtuous lights and separate waste collection in Venice where the famous and prestigious carnival will be illuminated by Ecolamp, the consortium for the recovery and processing of light sources exhausted, who will attend for the duration of the event (11 days) through six Temporary Store located in the main city areas, from which you can find information about the Consortium and its activities. It will also set up the exhibition "Lamp & RiLamp", where the visitors will be accompanied, through a multisensory path divided into five modules, in a journey of awareness and knowledge. In addition you can participate in "Love Game", a photography contest that has as protagonists the low power neon Voltonio and the green bins Bidonia. For Ecolamp an operation of classic communication, educational and institutional in the high season of tourism of the capital of Veneto. The campaign aims to inform the proper waste separation lights, particularly low-energy light bulbs, chases an international visibility even if the group operates at national level.
