Information, entertainment and sustainability: the three keys words of the European Week of Waste Reduction 2010 in Valle d’Aosta
by Valeria Rocca
Thanks to the Land and Environmental councilor, this year the Valle d’Aosta has opened the door to the European Week for Waste Reduction 2010 organization which will hold several interesting initiatives throughout the region.
Saturday, November the 20th will see the event is opened to the public on the Piazza Chanoux of Aosta, along with three information points where it is possible to find useful information on the topics of waste reduction, recycling and home composting. Particular space will be devoted to children through the exchange of books and games to help them understand the process and benefits of recycling.
Also on November 20th the first movements were taken by the ECO-camper, a van equipped for touring, which will move between municipalities of Valle d’Aosta until November 28th. The goal is to provide information and details on the topics of waste reduction and distribute the ‘Ecolo-Sac’ (eco-bag) to citizens to use for their shopping as an alternative to disposable plastic. In addition to this, disposable plastic bags will be banned in Valle d’Aosta in 2011. This issue and the legislation surrounding it is expected to be covered in a special issue of the Ascom Confcommercio Journal “L’Informatore Commerciale ed Economico” (The Commercial and Economic Information), which is to be published during the European Week of Waste Reduction. The piece will be sent to all members and merchants within the region. Retailers will also be sent a sticker asking them to join the movement to only give out biodegradable bags.
Of particular interest is the play “Meno 100kg – Ricette per una dieta della nostra pattumiera” (Less than 100kg – Recipes for a diet of our trash), which is scheduled for the evening of November 24th at the youth center in Aosta. Designed and created by Roberto Cavallo, the President of AICA and an expert of waste at the European level, the recital is a unique channel of communication for raising awareness on environmental issues of waste reduction, which allows people to get in direct contact with one another by understanding and interpreting people’s moods.
The stage is transformed into a brightly colored house equipped with a kitchen, bathroom and a garden in which the actors recount, in an engaging manner, the activities that everyone can put into practice in their everyday lives to help reduce waste production. At the climax, almost as a reminder, the audience members are each given a ‘recipe’, or list of initiatives, that they can undertake in order to partake in this ‘dustbin diet’. Everything is documented by careful scientific research that makes the show even more valuable.
Curiously, again, the meeting “Mangiare senza inquinare” (Eating with a clear conscience) has been arranged for the afternoon of November the 25th at the Hotel des Etats of Aosta. With the participation of anthropologist Marcela Olmedo, Les Jardins du Chateau, the Institute of Regional Agriculture, and Coldiretti, it will try to address the topic of “Zero Kilometer” food and the importance of families choosing local produce in order to avoid excessive CO2 emissions and save on unnecessary shipping.
It will be a busy day, on Saturday the 27th where in the morning there is a conference organized by ‘AVCU’ (Association Valdotaine Consommateurs et Usagers) and a school dedication entitled “Io non spreco” (I do not waste). It will present the artist Chicco Margaroli’s vision realized by Luca Bich. The themes of course being the reuse and recycling of materials.
Another project, scheduled the same day, introduces us the to culinary world. “Re-cucino” (Re-cook), with the collaboration by the Chefs Association of Valle d’Aosta and the Women of Wine, will teach participants how to cook dishes with leftover food or remains in the refrigerator, in order to encourage the public to avoid wasting food.
And so to the final day of the event, November the 28th, where, again the youth center of Aosta will show “- Spr+Eco: Formule per non alimentare lo spreco.” (Formulas for non-food waste).
The objective of this initiative is to reflect on how we can change the negative view on waste into a sustainable development perspective.
Participants Massimo Cirri, the Radio 2 host, and Andrea Segrè, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Bologna, will explain the mechanisms of the Last Minute Market, a tangible example of the conversion of food waste that is already active in more than 40 Italian cities.
The result will be produced and screened during the European Week for Waste Reduction in the various events planned, in the form of a 10 minute video on the topic of reuse.
Among the experts there is satisfaction with what has been done so far. Manuela Zublena, the Regional Councillor for the area said, “Taking the opportunity given by the organizing committee of the European Week for Waste Reduction for Valle d’Aosta is to participate actively in the important event, and once again, we want to remind citizens that the waste is a collective problem and that the best form of waste is the one that is never produced. Once again we were able to participate in the ‘Week’ thanks to the relationship of close cooperation between local authorities and private entities, thus ensuring more effective measures.”
